Night Visions was a horror anthology series that ran on Fox in 2001. 13 episodes were produced, but only 10 ended up airing in the initial run because of coverage of the September 11th attacks. Those last 3 episodes did end up airing in repeats on SciFi and Chiller.

The show was hosted by Henry Rollins and had such directors as Joe Dante and Tobe Hooper. Guest stars included Aidan Quinn, Lou Diamond Phillips, Brian Dennehy (2 episodes), Bill Pullman (starred and directed), Cary Elwes, Luke Perry, Sherilyn Fenn, Jerry O’Connell, Amy Jo Johnson, Randy Quaid, Bridget Fonda, Jack Palance, Marla Sokoloff, Chad Lowe, Michael Rapaport, Thora Birch, Malcolm McDowell and many more!

This show is one of my favorites in the anthology genre. I guess it helps that there were only 13 episodes, but there was barely a stinker in the 26 stories told. The acting was great, there was very little CGI, which can really date a show. The stories themselves, however, really hold up. Event though I knew how they would end, I still thoroughly enjoyed this re-watch. Henry Rollins is a surprisingly good host; he’s no Rod Serling of course, but his serious delivery of the opening and closing lines of each story is certainly fine, and he doesn’t take away from the show.

I’d be hard pressed to choose a favorite story from the series, so I’ll name my top 14, in airdate order:

    1. The Passenger List
    2. Dead Air
    3. A View Through the Window
    4. Quiet Please
    5. Used Car
    6. Rest Stop
    7. After Life
    8. The Occupant
    9. Neighborhood Watch
    10. My So-Called Life and Death
    11. The Dog House
    12. Still Life
    13. Darkness (despite my hatred of Michael Rappaport)
    14. Patterns

OK, so I ended up picking over half of them. The only ones I don’t like are Reunion and Switch.

Night Visions never got an official DVD release, which is a shame, and unfortunately I think it’s time has passed. It’s too bad, because I would love to have a proper set, maybe with some commentary from the directors and stars, maybe some of the commercials that ran on Fox at the time too.

You can watch Night Visions on Youtube, with one episode (6) missing because of Youtube blocking it.

Which stories were your favorites? Let me know in the comments.
